"The Toyota HEV Prius"

The big three executives attending EVS-14 were blown away by the advanced technology of drive train of the Toyota HEV Prius and its quiet computer controlled mode of operation on either battery, gasoline generator assist, or direct gas drive to the wheels.

The US left-handed version of the Prius now gets 68 mpg in the city and as much as 75 mpg on the open road and has a range of 850 miles on a tank of gas.

Everyone was able to ride or drive the Prius at EVS-14 and we noticed the extreme interest in this hybrid technology. Toyota would have been years ahead of any other major auto manufacturer, but was beaten to showrooms by the Honda Insight in the US, even though 25.000 Prius models had already been sold in Japan. Other auto manufacturers are still playing catch-up.

The oil companies effectively blocked a high mileage 68 mpg Honda 1.3 CRX from import to this country back in the early 80's. But times have changed, especially in light of the horrendous MTBE scandal recently exposed by CBS 60 Minutes.
