The Elten Custom suggests the shape of town cars in the 21st Century. Compact, round and attractively styled body is small enough for running errands in crowded cities. Under the round engine hood is the SHPS (Subaru Hybrid Power System) which has realized 33.0km-per-liter fuel efficiency under the 10E15 testing mode.

Inspired from Subaru's ultra-light, ultra-compact car of several decades ago, the "Subaru 360,"the Elten Custom shows the form of town cars to come. Subaru's own SHPS hybrid power train utilizes a highly efficient, electronic throttle-controlled inline four engine and an CVT with built-in dual motor and torque split mechanism. Nickel-Hydride batteries are used for their excellent safety features and energy storing abilities.

The Elten Custom needs no special technique to ride: just start the engine and go! The drive motor operates with the electric current that the engine generates, so the drive is smooth as a "motor." When it's time to go quicker, both the engine and drive motor powers the car. And at constant speeds, the Elten Custom runs with the engine, storing excess energy to the battery via the drive motor.

As a result, the SHPS realizes economical running with smooth drive feeling that's same as current, gasoline-powered cars. Supplying the energy is also done in the same manner as conventional cars: just filling up gasoline will do. The battery is stored under the rear seat and enables a roomy interior space enough for four adults.
